Yarning with Derrick Jensen (on writing, civilisation, experts, storying, bear cubs, and more)

Patrick yarned with environmental writer Derrick Jensen this morning and we present their conversation here, in its entirety. We hope you enjoy this weaving, wefting, circling, listening and sharing.

Here is the audio (1hr, 11mins),

And here is the vision.

Produced by Meg with assistance from Beck Lowe and Derrick’s friend Heather.

I first encountered Jensen’s work last year, and I’ve been following your work, Patrick and Meg, for many years. What a collision of two influences! Thank you for sharing this.

If I might give some cheeky book recommendations (apropos this fascinating topic of written and oral/aural language), Eros the Bittersweet by Anne Carson, and The Birth of Pleasure by Carol Gilligan, are two books that first opened my mind to the “nuances” of written/oral/aural language exchange both in collective and the personal paradigms. In case any fellow composting bookworms who also love reculturing oral language practices want something new to read and chat about. (:

That was wonderful. Listened to while attending this wee bit of country… breathing it in, breathing it out. A great yarn. Thanks for the share. X

    1. Lovely to receive this, Glen.

Wow, an encounter of giants! I want to thank you, Patrick, because I was introduced to Derrick by some of your older posts last year, and I’ve been reading Derrick since then. Derrick books solidify the way I see this beautiful world. The way we are entangled with all the living beings, such as bears, emu, biome compost, or a delicious carrot. The stories you write on this blog and the stories Derrick writes on his Substack or his books made me follow and believe which is the most respectful path to choose. Thank you both. Wow, I was curious about your doctoral thesis, Patrick! Do you ever publish it to a wider public? Tiago

        1. Thanks Tiago, we’re glad you enjoyed Patrick and Derrick’s yarn. Patrick has always made his doctoral thesis publicly available, and gratefully the university has done the same. You can download the thesis from this page.

Something happened here alongside the speaking, and it offered me (the watcher/listener) a soft joy and sweetness. Thank you!

    1. Thanks Steph, glad to hear it, and thanks for sharing this.

Thanks so much for this wonderfully energising yarn! Started listening a few weeks ago & have been looking forward to a window of time in which to enjoy it as a continuous whole ever since. So exciting to hear such highly articulate yet deeply feeling beings working out what they think through the process of speaking, even if they know it in their bones: the antithesis of what’s toxic about those experts who hold our culture in thrall w/ their instrumentalist scripts. Bless you!

    1. Thanks Shane, we loved the anecdotes, teachings and wisdom Derrick brought to this conversation. We’re glad it energised you!
