Reculturing agrarianism (with Silvia Bottinelli)

Patrick had the pleasure of speaking with art historian Silvia Bottinelli this morning about her research on the politics and aesthetics of food sovereignty, the origins of her work, and some of the challenges and cultural renewal taking place in art practices that include agrarian nodes.

In a previous video, we offered our contribution to her book, Artists and the Practice of Agriculture, which constitutes an interview Silvia conducted with us a few years ago.

In today’s conversation, Patrick begins by asking Silvia about her origin story into this research.

You can either listen in (60mins),

or watch their conversation.

Thanks for sharing your stories of reintegrating art with everyday life.

Thank you for sharing God bless your work. Prayer to Creator God
      Dear Creator God,
You made the sky, the land, and the sea.
You gave us trees, flowers, animals, and food.
You made every person with love.

Thank You for the beauty of nature.
Thank You for the sun, the rain, and the seasons.
Help us to care for the earth You made.

Show us how to live gently and share what we have.
Teach us to plant, to grow, and to give thanks.
Forgive us when we hurt Your creation.

      May we walk with kindness.
May we protect the land, the animals, and each other.
May Your peace grow like a garden in every heart.

      In Jesus’ name, Amen.

      1. Thanks Lynda, and blessings to all the small and big gods and goddesses.

I really love your way with words Patrick, your weaving of questions and ideas.
You are such a role model to so many men, your weaving of strength and vulnerability.
I was hating on myself for being a white man – I was absorbing all the toxic male shaming.
And then someone sent me your video on what is initiation and I realised, through your words, who I am.
‘What would Meg and Patrick do?’ is a question my girlfriend and I often ask ourselves.
‘They would listen’ is usually our answer.
    And so we do.

    1. Thanks for sharing this, Sam. Glad you have found nourishment here. It is so easy to forget to listen in the hubbub of life, to make space for listening. To do the typical busy human thing and push it aside for more lively activities. But, yes, what a powerful medicine listening is, when we remember to. We appreciate your warmth and connection.

A wonderful conversation. In form closer to singing in parts… counterpoint, harmony, dissonance, rounding, silences, breath and fun. Thanks. X

    1. Thanks Glen, that’s a sweet analogy. Here’s some music we’ve been enjoying.

  4. Culture is the food of the soul; food is also creative cultural recipes…
So culture is the food of the souls that live where that food comes from. That’s why it is already in the vernacular (and the failing attempt to replace this with colonising intends) of many languages, like the recognised need to grow your garden, the basic need of cultures and fermentation processes in the cycle of growing and attending food preparation, to be able to live and grow by the passing seasons… Like peasants have done for a long time, either in agrarian or roving social societies.
