One of our family’s homemade games, Neopeasant Revillaging, is featured in The New Peasants documentary.

Some who have seen the film have been asking about how they can also play it, so we thought we’d post this invitation to make your own version.
First, you take a Monopoly board – you know that infamous game that grooms children to become good little hoarding capitalists – then you hack it with images (scissors and glue required) that represent the world you want to lean further into, the world you want to more fully inhabit one day.
Here is our board hack, as just one example.

There are no rules, just one principle:
Everyone works together to defund the bank and redistribute the money to regrow the village in such a way that money becomes less and less central to our economic reality. What replaces money are our relationships with the living, sensing, giving worlds of the world. In other words, the more we regrow subsistence local resistance, the more our confidence develops to degrow big Finance dependancy.
This is in-effect the meta story of our bridging, transitioning lifeway, and is central to the story of The New Peasants.
Please share with us any games, hacks or life processes that you are currently excited by that you embody, or would like to embody more of in your life, which helps you change the narrative from scarcity-driven competition and greed to abundance, relationships and gratitude.
I know you’re not big on bringing things into the monetary economy but this is absolutely a game I would buy to share with my family and scouts. I have been looking for the original Monopoly rules as well without success so far. How great would it be to teach non-monetary economy as part of a PDC? I’m not sure a home made version would have the same impact on the yet to be converted.
Thanks Belinda, if only hipster capitalists had the wit to bring such a game like Defund the Bank or Neopeasant Revillaging into reality as a market-ready, replicable product. But this isn’t going to occur bc they’re married to growth ideology and because a ‘handmade life’ (to draw on Martin Shaw) is the village coming back into relationship with the forest. Hipsters may think they’re achieving this with their extensive range of eco-products, but really they’re just fiddling while Rome burns. The purpose of taking back the means of production into creative, handmade household and village realms, is so we don’t lose touch with the imaginal realm, and in the process become economically incarcerated.
What an awesome game! Let’s make it the game of our lives!!! I am anxiously waiting for word on the screening of The New Peasants here in the States.
Be well.
Thanks PermaGrannie! Glad you like it.
Yes, we’re awaiting news about screenings further-a-field, too. Many people are asking us. Hopefully Happen Films will call that soon. If you go to thenewpeasants.com and scroll down to ‘Hold Your Own Screening’ you can register your interest and be notified of when screenings elsewhere will be available.
Thanks for the picture beautiful ones – this will go nicely as a DIY kit for me to make up my own board! It might serve as a de-industrializing therapy tool for my family… Thank you too for sharing your lives, your loves, losses, grief and joy so openly in your film – inspirational work. Thanks brother! Nice one 🙏🏽
You guys are hilarious! I love this game so much and look forward to making our own version of the game to play with our littlies. If my eyes don’t deceive me, you have cut up Pip Mag and the permaculture calendar – what a good idea! We have kept all our old copies too. #nosuchthingaswaste
Great pickup, Ginny. Yes, past Pip mag collaging. We’d love to see your family’s version when you’re done. ❤️
