Hello Dear Readers,
A little news from the hearth of Tree Elbow where this morning we ate the last apple from the garden and cooked up the last of our tomatoes.
This week Meg recorded Patrick in the produce garden speaking about the valuable materials we gather at this time of year to tend the wintering soils.
Woody has started his own YouTube channel where he shows, teaches and inspires. He is currently editing a how-to video on converting medlars into fruit leather. This one on restoring an axe he found at the tip is one of our favourites so far:
Recently, we hosted a visit from Faith Mutheu who lives and works at the base of Mt Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Faith is director of the Upendo Children’s Home, has recently studied permaculture and is looking to establish food gardens and humanure compost systems at the orphanage. Over tea we talked about humanure, grey-water systems, rocket stoves, chickens, bees and rites of passage.

We have been teaching on a number of online and in-person courses, and this weekend we are hosting our final house and garden tour until the springtime. What a beautiful and bountiful season! Prepping winter beds, saving seeds, filling our wood stores and the cellar so we can move a little slower over the colder months when the garden goes quiet, taking a break, like the cormorants on our local lake.

Nice, and go Woody! That looks like a fair sized angle grinder, lucky you are strapping lad these days.
Wow. Well done Woody. I greatly admire the skill and knowledge you have for such a young fella. And you seem very confident in front of the camera. Well done. I will subscribe to your channel
Thanks Mel, he’s chuffed you think so. Sending much love to your coastal clearing from our highland one.
Thanks Dave, so good to hear from you. Trusting your autumn is glorious and your cellar is over flowing. With seasonal abundance and love, AaF
Thank you for sharing the joys of being an earth carer and reminding us all to live seasonally, to adjust our routines and tasks to work with earth. Thank you for your light in the darkness.
Thank you Lavina, we’re feeling both your earth and people care coming through your words and consciousness.
Wow Woody, wonderful! Go on with these nice and practical videos! ❣️🪓🪚🔧❣️
Thanks Christiane! 🙏🏽
Hi Woody, we stumbled across your YouTube channel by chance this evening and really enjoyed the videos – such a refreshing change from the AI slop that is becoming more prevalent on there these days. Good on you!
Can we be the first to make a request? We heard on Catie’s Reskilliance podcast that you’re a knife-sharpening guru, and we’d love for you to show the world how you work your magic!
Thanks Craig and Justine, yes, good idea, Woody is keen. Thanks for your support.
Congratulations Woody on your YouTube channel, I have subscribed and will be sharing your videos with my grandchildren as well. I’m off to sharpen our axe, thank you.
Thanks Deb!🙏🏽
Lovely post, well done all.
Bill Mollison said using newspaper in the garden was turning bad news into good.
Your garden is looking beautiful, I hope to get down there one day.
I’m just so impressed with Woody’s you tube. So well presented. Well done Woody.
Oh that’s a great Bill quote! Thanks Kate 🙏🏽
Humus instead of hubris: you’re awesome Patrick. Also AWESOME AXE restoration Woody! Love to you all xxx
So good to hear from you Fiona. We hope all is well with you coastal mob up north. ❤️
Kia ora Artist as Family!
Thank you Woody for that very informative video on restoring the axe. It came at a very good time for me as I have a bigger one that needs the same TLC but I don’t have an angle grinder. Perhaps a file would work?
Thank you too Meg and Patrick for your Autumn gathering and spreading video. I’m in the south of Te Wai Pounamu (South Island NZ) and have just been doing what you have. But living on the edge of a sea bay I have easy access to seaweed which when the tides and currents are generous I’ll be collecting too.
Visions of future abundance!

Thanks Peta, life in a leaf humus household economy is rich and prosperous. Yes, a file is absolutely fine.
Thank you for the fall primer and that stunning spirit that is Woody.
❤️
Hubris, very clever. Thank you for bringing me joy and a laugh yesterday and still having me thinking about it today. x
Thanks Jess 😊
